The Secret Training Drills of Olympic Gold Medalists

Olympics

Dear Athlete,

Let's be honest: The Olympics have very little to do with real sport.

Every four years, the great five-ringed circus rolls into a city somewhere in the world, absorbing the heat and light of global attention for a few weeks. Yes, we see great feats of endurance, speed and strength, but what does it really have to do with sport as we know and love it?

How can you – without access to expensive coaches, vast resources and state-of-the-art training facilities – benefit from the Olympic Games?

I'm here to tell you.

Countries like the USA, UK, China and Australia have poured millions into sports research in order to win Olympic medals – even at a time when in some countries, like the UK, sports funding has been slashed.

That research has led to breakthroughs in training techniques, new findings and advances that will see records tumble as they do every four years.

We can't turn you into an Olympic athlete, but we can make sure you benefit too.

To make this happen, I asked our team of expert writers to create three special 'knowledge packs' to show athletes like you how to apply the secrets of gold-winning Olympic athletes to your own training.

My team - some of whom, such as David Joyce, actually work with Olympic athletes - have done me proud.

They have pulled together a wealth of training advice, rare knowledge and secret tips that you can start applying to your training today (if you're a coach, you will be able to pass it on to the athletes you work with).

We even watched some of the world's top sprinters performing their secret training drills...and can now reveal how they do it.

These special gifts, will only be available for free during these Olympic Games. After that, we will have to charge for them. In fact, giving them away is costing us a lot of money - but I'm so excited about the Olympics I don't care!

Here, take them!

They are yours for free with a 2-month trial membership of Peak Performance.

Read on for full details of everything you get and what it will do for you. I can't wait to hear your stories of how it's transformed your training.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Pye

Technical Drills to take your Running to the next level

All the world's best sprinters do running drills to perfect their form and strengthen areas prone to injury.

Peak Performance visited the training grounds of three of the world's fastest sprinters - Tyson Gay, Alyson Felix and Veronica Campbell-Brown and watched them perform some of their 'secret drill weapons'. These drills have made them some of the fastest men and women sprinters on earth. Here's a sneak peek:

  • Leg cycles

Designed to: improve your pick up

How to perform: begin running at a slow to medium speed then focus on cycling each leg, so that your foot passes over the ankle of your other leg and your heel comes up close to your butt on each cycle. Make your movements fast and dynamic and coordinate your arms with your legs. Strike the ground with your forefeet, with your feet coming back toward the track and underneath your body. The aim is to pull yourself forward with every stride.

Do: 4 x 20m

  • '4' drill

Designed to: engage your hamstring muscles in the running action

How to perform: stand next to railing (or suitable height object) and place one hand against it for balance. Lift your outside leg off the ground. Keep your toes up – or 'foot cocked' as the coaches say. Concentrate and use your hamstrings to pull your heel up toward your butt. Keep the thigh of this leg angled toward the ground with its knee in front of your standing leg's knee. It's the end position of this drill which when viewed from the side looks like a four, hence its name.

Do: 3 x 10 on each leg and increase the speed as you gain confidence

These are just two of the drills used by today's top Olympic sprinters revealed by our undercover reporter for the first time in Secrets of Olympic Gold

PART TWO: 5 Keys to Podium-Ready

The Peak Performance team of experts have quizzed the world's top coaches to pull together an unbeatable collection on workouts, exercises and strategies that will make you the Olympic medal-winner of your club.

What are the 5 keys to being podium ready?

The Peak Performance team reveal all in this valuable report, available FREE to new Peak Performance members as part of our 2012 Olympic package.

Key #1: Coaching Time Series Analysis for Performance Evaluation

Olympic athletes know the importance of tracking their performance – we'll show you how to do it too.

It sounds complicated, but time series analysis simply involves plotting your performance over time and using the results to evaluate and maximise your performance.

First, you need to decide what you want to improve. Is it your sprint time, your vertical jump, your pitch speed? Second, you need to measure it over time. You or your coach will then be able to take this data and use it to work out exactly what you need to work on to improve.

We explain how to do it in 5 Keys to Podium-Ready, part of your FREE Olympics bundle.

Key #2: How To Get Rid Of Nutrition Mistakes (And Boost Your Performance)

What will be served in the Olympic Village? These are the foods that will supercharge your performance.

What are the mistakes being made - still, in the 21st century - by elite athletes, and how you can avoid them.

Andrew Hamilton reveals the best sources of the nutrients you need - and what might be stopping you.

Key #3: Psychology: How To Get into the Zone

How Olympic athletes turn psychological pressure into fuel.

Every Olympic athlete understands the vital importance of mentally preparing themselves for the big event. And it's a lesson that every athlete needs to learn.

We reveal, step-by-step, how top coaches train their athletes to get into the zone and ensure they are fully ready to maximise their chance of winning a medal.

We also tell you what factors can stop you getting into the zone, so you know exactly how to avoid them.

It's all part of 5 Keys to Podium-Ready, which you'll find in your FREE Olympics bundle.

Key #4: Training: How To Structure The Best Recovery Programs

How do Olympic athletes ensure they are in peak condition at the right moment?

Recovery is an important part of all training programs. Olympic athletes are coached to ensure that their bodies are in peak condition on the big day.

But it's not just about rest. There are many techniques, from water therapy to active recovery, that need to be tailored to the individual athlete.

We'll tell you how to adopt the techniques of the top athletes and their coaches and ensure that you are always ready for your big day.

Key #5: Physiology: Beating the Heat

The hot weather has arrived in London just in time for the big event – how will the athletes ensure they are prepared?

When training in hot weather, it's likely that you'll feel more sluggish. This is because your body regulates your activity level based on its ability to keep itself cool. What everyone agrees upon is that training the body to take a longer time to reach this temperature will delay fatigue and provide a performance edge.

We explain how to train in hot weather in 5 Keys to Podium-Ready, part of your FREE Olympics bundle.

PART THREE: Core Conditioning Workout

Olympic athletes and coaches understand the importance of core stability, and we want you to share in their knowledge and make sure your core is strong and stable.

The aim of core stability training is to effectively recruit the trunk musculature and then learn to control the position of the lumbar spine during dynamic movements.

In this workout, we share the exercises used by Olympics athletes that will help you strengthen your core and greatly improve your fitness.

Example exercise

Swiss ball crunches

  • Select a Swiss ball that is the correct size – when seated, knees should be bent to 90- degrees and hips level with knees
  • Carefully walk your feet forwards and lean back until you are lying on the Swiss ball The ball should be located in the natural curve of the lower back
  • Place your hands, either by your temples or your opposite shoulders, with your arms crossed
  • Curl up by strongly contracting the abdominal muscles. Breathe out as you raise your shoulders
  • Hold this most contracted position for 1-2 seconds before lowering back to the starting position
  • Arch your back only as far as you feel comfortable with, but aim to lower your shoulders slightly lower than your hips to maximise the stretch in your abdominals

Download the whole workout routine now as part of your three-part Olympic bundle, FREE with a 2-month trial membership of Peak Performance - available only during the London Olympics.
